[Difference between Han-eri and Date-eri]
▶ Han-eri (Under-collar)
This is used to prevent the kimono collar from getting dirty from makeup, etc., and is sewn onto the collar of the nagajuban (under-kimono).
A han-eri is necessary for all kimonos, and without it, the collar stiffener cannot be inserted, resulting in an uneven and unattractive collar.
▶ Date-eri (Layered Collar)
This is worn directly over the kimono collar to create the appearance of wearing multiple kimonos layered together.
While han-eri also adds a touch of elegance to the kimono, a date-eri adds another color between the kimono and the han-eri, making the chest area of the kimono very vibrant.
The basic rule for choosing the color of a date-eri is to match it with the color of the obi-age (sash accessory) or obi-jime (sash cord), or with a color found in the obi's pattern.
