The origins of Iga Kumihimo are ancient, said to date back to before the Nara period. It is made using silk threads primarily, with gold and silver threads as supplementary threads, crafted on traditional braiding looms.
Te-gumi-himo (hand-braided cords) are particularly famous, and the unique texture of the braid, woven from beautifully dyed silk threads, possesses an unfading charm.
In 1976, it was designated as a Traditional Craft by the Minister of International Trade and Industry.
