Holzkunst Christian Ulbricht Vintage Christian Ulbricht German Incense Smoker‎ Teacher ABC Book West Germany

Ulbricht is one of the most prestigious names in German folk art. Founded in 1928, the company is famous for its Chubby and Miniature series of smokers and nutcrackers. This wooden figurine is a traditional German incense smoker, known as a Räuchermann, originating from the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) region of Germany. Specifically, this piece represents a teacher or scholar, identified by the ABC book he is holdin Designed in two pieces that separate at the waist. A small incense cone is placed on the metal tray in the lower half, and once lit, the hollow upper body is replaced. The smoke then drifts out of the character's open mouth, making it look as if he is actually smoking a pipe. The circular stamp reads Handmade in West Germany and features the company's U and bird logo. The mention of West Germany dates this piece to before German reunification in 1990 (likely the 1980s). Excellent preowned conditon. Approximately 8.25 tall.
