【K】Showa Retro TANI (TANI) Kajita Manufacturing 10-point crampons mountaineering gear
● TANI (Tani) brand crampons (anti-slip device for mountaineering).
These are tools worn on mountaineering boots to walk on snow and ice.
10-point crampons.
Please check the condition in the photos.
● The TANI brand was renamed KAJITAX in the 1970s, and MONTBELL took over in 2011.
These crampons were mainstream around 1975 (Showa 50), before the widespread adoption of pressed crampons. They were manufactured by Kajita Seisakusho in Kasugai City, Aichi Prefecture.
They were made by cutting thick steel plates like paper cutouts, then bending and twisting them into a three-dimensional shape.
Initially, only the 10-point type was available, but as the 12-point type with two front points protruding diagonally appeared, a type with six front points was also sold. Size adjustment was roughly selected from several sizes to fit the user's shoes at the time of purchase, and the overall length was finely adjusted by moving the front part with a joint screw. While it had the advantage of being able to thicken the metal like forged molds, its disadvantages included the inability to adjust the width and the manufacturing effort, although not as much as forging. It gradually became obsolete with the spread of pressed types.
Partway through, examples of the joint parts, where force was applied, breaking occurred, so an improvement was made by adding a plate that received the joint screw and then connected to the rear part.
