This beautiful vintage jumbo cup and saucer set is an Italian pattern that was produced between 1990 and 2000 in Staffordshire England. Crafted by Spode as part of the Archive Collection. The various designs of Italian scenes are  intricately embedded in each piece. Each scene is very naturalistic and blends well with its cranberry red pink color and creamy white base. The center medallion depicts an idealized pastoral landscape filled with classic 17th-century European romantic motifs. The left side is dominated by towering, partially collapsed triumphal arches, and Roman-style ruins. In the foreground, a figure herds animals (goats or cattle) near a water source. In the background sits a medieval castle or fortified hill town beneath a soft, billowing cloud landscape. These beautiful classical and historical scenes are bordered with highly detailed geometric cell patterns or diaper - work and flowers like dahlia and chrysanthemum. A repeating scroll or wave boundary cleanly separates the busy oriental border from the open, Italian center scene The artist is very successful in conveying  the Italians' way of life  during the early years, their simplicity and resourcefulness.
