This CD features the representative works of Czech master Leos Janacek. The tracks include the rhapsodic tone poem Taras Bulba, which depicts a heroic epic, and the masterpiece Sinfonietta, known for its brilliant fanfares. The unique world of Janacek, characterized by his wild rhythms and nostalgic melodies, is condensed into this recording.

The performance is by Sir Charles Mackerras, an authority on Janacek research, conducting the world-class Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Mackerras's meticulous interpretation breathes life into every detail of the score. Above all, the Vienna Philharmonic's characteristic lustrous strings and brilliant brass give unparalleled elegance and color to this wild music. This is a landmark recording from the early days of digital recording in the 1980s, and its captivating performance, a masterful fusion of the orchestra's overwhelming technical brilliance and passionate expression, can be considered the definitive version of these works.
