The grim reaper, Death Melmel, comes to the human world on orders from her boss to bring back the souls of unhappy people. Just as she makes a contract with an office worker named Tokyo Rei (Tama) she meets by chance, promising to take her soul if she repays her 10 million yen debt, she is told by her boss that she cannot return to heaven until she can collect souls. Surrounded by eccentric characters such as her junior office worker, Inukai Mirai, who is after Tama, and her sadistic landlord, Harukaze Kodama, they begin to live together in a dilapidated apartment with no gas or water.
