A dazzling love story from the Farewell My Concubine trio: Leslie Cheung, Gong Li, and director Chen Kaige.

[Synopsis]
1911, the year China was shaken by the Xinhai Revolution.
In Suzhou, the city of lush green waters, the wealthy Pan family is filled with the smoke of opium, and the master's beloved daughter, Ruyi, is also lost in its haze. Chong Liang, a bright young boy, comes to this house seeking refuge with his sister, who married the young master after losing their parents.
However, he is abused by the opium-addicted young master and is driven to despair when he is made a man on the same night as his beloved sister, leading him to flee the mansion...
Time passes, and it is the 1920s in the magical city of Shanghai. A handsome young man, dressed in a stylish suit, dashes through a dance hall.
Xiao Xie, a notorious gigolo who extorts married women, is the grown-up Chong Liang.
He becomes a member of the Shanghai mafia, deceiving women with his sweet smile, yet seeking solace in women who resemble his sister.
One day, his boss gives him an order: to seduce Ruyi, the sister of the young master who inherited the Pan family fortune after the young master's death.
