By attaching a booster to the shank of a cornet mouthpiece, the mouthpiece itself gains weight, eliminating extraneous noise from the lips and allowing more regular vibrations to be transmitted to the instrument.

Many boosters sold recently are very light, and it seems that heavy ones like this product are no longer available.
