Sextant (for navigation, etc.)

US Size:

Thank you for visiting my shop!

#Welcome to Tonkichi's Shop

This item was given to me by an acquaintance a long time ago.

Manufacturer: TAMAYA
Material: Brass

I had no knowledge of sextants, but when I decided to list this item, I took the opportunity to do some quick research online.
The following technical terms are quoted from the TAMAYA instruction manual and online explanations.
If you are knowledgeable, please view this as the mistakes of an amateur.

Amateur Operational Check:

I went to a nearby sea and measured the sun's angle.
When I aligned the index bar and micrometer to zero and looked at the horizon, the left half (transparent) and the right half (reflective) of the horizon mirror appeared level (ok!).

Since the sextant is heavy and difficult to keep level, I used a digital camera tripod to support my elbow and maintain horizontal alignment.
The telescope is different from general photography; if attached in reverse, the sun appears smaller, and as shown in the video, I was able to confirm the sun.
The arc and the detaching lever (index bar) slide smoothly. When the sun approaches the water's surface, it seems difficult to adjust without the micrometer.
The sun rapidly descends (2x angle) due to clouds.

I was also able to experience lowering the sun to the sea surface (horizon) by swinging it like the pendulum of a grandfather clock.
This is the extent of my operational check for this Mercari listing.

Based on the above, I believe it is usable.

Regarding the illumination battery:
From the shape of the holder, I assumed it was a single dry cell battery (1.5V) and tested it (Photo 8).
It lit up, but it was dim. The switch only turns on when pressed firmly (it seems to be a contact with a stainless steel plate, possibly causing resistance? It's ON only while pressed).
The lamp is inserted into a cylindrical boss (negative frame ground).
The spare lamp has not been tested for lighting.
Current models of TAMAYA sextants appear to have been improved to use two AA batteries (3V) and LEDs.

In Photo 12, measurement tools are not included in the transaction (e.g., convex scale, set square).
