Grand Hotel is a 1932 American drama film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). It won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 5th Academy Awards (1931-1932). It is also the first and only film to be nominated for and win only the Best Picture award at the Academy Awards. Produced with an all-star MGM cast, this film is based on a stage play adapted from Vicki Baum's novel. Its groundbreaking story, which featured various characters converging on a single stage and their lives unfolding simultaneously, was a huge hit at the time. Following the success of this film, many works using a similar technique were produced, and this format came to be known as the Grand Hotel style, becoming a typical example of an ensemble drama film.
