Types of Hakama
There are generally two main types of hakama.
Umamori-bakama, which are split into two parts inside, and Andon-bakama, which are completely cylindrical.

Umamori-bakama
This type was worn by samurai in the Edo period for horseback riding.
It is split into two parts like culottes, designed for easy riding.

Andon-bakama
This type has no inner partition (machi) and is shaped like a skirt. It is simpler in construction compared to Umamori-bakama and is said to have been common fashion in the late Edo period. It is often associated with formal occasions such as weddings and funerals.

Hakama fabric is used for men's, women's, and children's hakama, and is available in silk, polyester, and wool. Silk is mainly produced for men's hakama, with famous striped patterns like Sendai-hira used for formal wear. Other types include Yonezawa-hira, Gosen-hira, and plain fabrics such as Omeshi and Tsumugi.
