Beautiful with its translucent amber color and natural mottled pattern, it has a light and flexible resilience. When held up to the light, the characteristic layered pattern of tortoiseshell can be clearly seen (see image).
The top features a Momiji (maple) and bamboo autumn motif created with gold maki-e, and the back also has a design, indicating intricate craftsmanship.
There is a signature at the base that can be read as Shinyama.

This item is believed to have been custom-made during the Japanese clothing culture of the Showa period. As natural tortoiseshell products are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain in recent years, this is a rare and exquisite piece.
