The Saji Pen (Spoon Nib)
It is hard and durable, allowing for the drawing of uniform lines.
This nib can create slight variations in line width (thick and thin lines) as well as uniform, thicker lines. By tilting the nib against the paper, you can achieve line variation.
It is also used for drawing manga.
About Nib Manufacturers
Lion, famous for office equipment, also produced nibs, but they are no longer manufactured.
Nib production and sales were discontinued over 20 years ago in 1996 (Heisei 8).
Currently, the Japanese nib brands available are Tachikawa, Nikko, and Zebra.
Tachikawa has inherited the Nikko brand, so only Tachikawa and Zebra are the current manufacturers.
Nikko brand nibs are a popular brand, supported by teachers at the Japan Penmanship Study Association.
There are claims that older products have better performance.
During the period of high economic growth, around Showa 60 (1985), the production of dip pens reached astronomical figures of 1 million gross (1 gross = 144 pens). However, with the times, government offices and banks also shifted to ballpoint pens.
Nibs were crafted by artisans using machines, and it is said that they still use the same machines today. I have heard that there are fewer artisans now, and the skills of the artisans from the past were higher.
Furthermore, chrome-colored nibs show less deterioration and are said to retain their original performance even today.
I also enjoy penmanship, and I change nibs depending on what I am writing.
Nikko brand pens are among my favorite nibs.
