☆What is Koyamaki?☆
It is said to be named Koyamaki because it grows abundantly on Mt. Koya, the head temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism in Wakayama Prefecture.
This is a log from that Koyamaki tree! It has a wonderful fragrance(^^)
Koyamaki is also water-resistant and durable, which is why it is used in the boats for the traditional Japanese Ukai (cormorant fishing).
☆Koyamaki's Sarereboku (Shareboku)☆
Sarereboku (Shareboku) refers to wood that has been exposed to wind and rain in the natural mountains, causing the outer sapwood to decay and disappear, leaving behind the remaining core wood.
It is said to be resistant to rot and durable because it is the remaining part.
A local lumber dealer told us that these are rarely available because they are naturally formed!
They are often used for high-end objets d'art and bonsai.
This is a type of lumber that is not commonly found on the market.
