Matsutani began his artistic career after being selected for the Japanese Painting division of the Nishinomiya City Exhibition. He later joined the Gutai Art Association, an avant-garde art group from the Kansai region that has seen a significant international reevaluation in recent years. Under the tutelage of leader Jirō Yoshihara, he distinguished himself with relief-like paintings created using adhesive.
In 1966, he won the Grand Prix at the Mainichi Art Competition and was sent to France as a recipient of a French government scholarship. This led to his creation of drawings by meticulously layering pencil lines onto long rolls of paper. Today, the technique of filling in the raised areas created by adhesive with black pencil is synonymous with the artist Takesada Matsutani.
