When the leaves are young and before the grains mature, they can be tilled directly into the soil as green manure. After the grains have ripened, the straw can be used as mulch after the seeds have been harvested. Areas mulched with straw will have significantly fewer weeds, similar to when mulch is applied. Since it takes about 3 months from planting to harvest, you can produce your own straw twice a year.
In the area where I live, there are free fields where you can take straw home freely, but I can't go during the times they are open because I'm busy. Therefore, I use these oats and rye for my mulch.

It is an annual plant and is written as 燕麦 in Kanji. The Kanji 円麦 or the reading enmugi are incorrect. It is also called oat or oats from its English name Oat. Morphologically, the genus Avena includes diploid sand oats and hexaploid common oats.

It is widely cultivated as feed, used as forage for silage or green harvesting, and is the second most cultivated winter feed crop after Italian ryegrass. In warmer regions, it is typically sown in autumn and overwintered, while in colder regions, it is sown in spring and harvested in summer or autumn. Additionally, many of the plants sold as cat grass are oats.

Spring sowing (early March to late May) and autumn sowing for overwintering (mid-October to early November) are possible. Due to its vigorous growth, it provides a large amount of organic matter when tilled into the soil. Some varieties have the effect of suppressing the root-knot nematode ( *Meloidogyne* spp.).
