History of Ougonkan
The origin of Ougonkan is unknown, but it is said to have been born from a natural cross between Satsuma mandarin and Yuzu.
It seems to have been eaten as Kinkan in Hioki District, Kagoshima Prefecture during the Meiji era,
and was later named Ougonkan and is currently distributed under this name.
It is also known by its alias, Golden Orange. Ougonkan, with its sweet, refreshing, and fruity aroma,
is sometimes used as an essential oil extracted from its peel.
Also, the peel of Ougonkan has a strong fragrance, so drying and finely chopping it is said to make a good condiment!
When to eat
Available from March to May.
The peel is slightly thick but can be peeled by hand,
and the inner sacs are thin, so they can be eaten as is.
Since they are small, you can eat several at once! They are a perfect citrus fruit for snacks.
