【Pure White】Masshiro Kiritsume Kiritsume Insect Specimen Darkling Beetle Leaf Beetle
Scientific Name: Onymacris sp.
Common Name: Namib Beetle
Onymacris is a genus of darkling beetles belonging to the family Tenebrionidae. Approximately 14 species are described in the Onymacris genus, primarily inhabiting the southwestern coast of Africa, particularly the Namib Desert.
This insect, which has managed to survive in the extremely arid conditions of the Namib Desert in Africa, about 1/50th the size of Saudi Arabia, at 1-2mm, raises its rear towards the direction of the sea breeze, collects moisture on its rear, and drinks plenty of water.
Why does moisture gather on its rear?
Because it possesses a function that has garnered global attention.
Recent nanotechnology analysis of this remarkable ability has revealed that the surface of its rear is covered with micron-level, alternating superhydrophobic, superhydrophilic, superhydrophobic, superhydrophilic... protrusions, with a water contact angle exceeding 165 degrees.
It is known as a water-saving bug that can help the world facing water shortages.
Please note that we cannot guarantee against deterioration during shipping.
We will ship the individual pictured, collected in Swakopmund, Namibia, in January 1993. My measurement indicated a head-body length of 7mm.
