【3D Specimen】Asian Giant Hornet Preying on Honeybee with Glass Dome - Living Creatures Encyclopedia

US Size:

Scientific Name: Vespa mandarinia?

Nests are built in enclosed spaces such as underground at the base of trees, tree hollows, under the floors of houses, and in attics. The nest is made by forming hexagonal tubes from fibers collected from dead wood, etc., hardened with saliva proteins like Japanese paper, and these tubes are arranged in several tiers to form a nest board.
This is a dangerous species with highly toxic and aggressive venom among the wasps inhabiting Japan. The median lethal dose (LD50) of the venom of the Japanese subspecies of the Asian giant hornet is 4.1 mg/kg. The venom contains an alarm pheromone, which is an alcohol, and plays a role in communicating danger to other hornets when the nest is threatened. In addition to its venomous stinger, this species also attacks prey with its powerful mandibles.
It has strong flight capabilities, flying at speeds of about 50 km/h, and possesses the endurance to travel up to 100 km in a single day when hunting.
Especially in autumn, if you are within its territory centered around the nest, it may emit a warning sound like clacking (the sound of its mandibles rubbing together) and persistently follow you around at a height of 2-3 meters above your head. This is a very dangerous situation, so it is important to listen carefully, confirm that it is not approaching rapidly, and then slowly and calmly move away from the area (sudden movements like running away are counterproductive).
In the summer, the diet for the larvae is diverse, including small to medium-sized beetles such as *Kabutomushi* (Japanese rhinoceros beetle), other species of wasps, true bugs like stink bugs and cicadas, moths and butterflies, and large caterpillars such as hawk moth larvae and longhorn beetle larvae. In early autumn, when these insects become scarce and the hornets must raise a large number of male and new queen hornets, their aggression particularly increases. They may attack large predatory insects like praying mantises, which can be dangerous, or raid the nests of social bees that form large colonies, such as Western honey bees, Oriental hornets, Japanese yellow hornet, and Japanese honey bees, to meet their needs. Raids are conducted collectively, which is unusual for hornets. After annihilating or driving away the worker bees from a nest, they also feed the killed worker bees to their larvae. However, large numbers of dead bodies begin to decay before they can be consumed, so they primarily break down live pupae, larvae, and the muscle-rich thoraxes of adult bees within the occupied nest, forming a paste, then shape it into meatballs and carry it away.
