Taizo Nagano (1922-1990) became the third-generation owner of Nagano Kanan-so, a tea shop run by his aunt and uncle, after World War II. Nagano Kanan-so is adjacent to the Nara National Museum and was also involved in publishing books on ancient art. Nagano, who learned photography self-taught, accompanied surveys during the early days of the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, photographing cultural assets of temples and shrines. He also worked on guidebooks for temples and Buddhist statues, and on art books published by Iwanami Shoten, such as Nara Rokudaiji Taikan and Yamato Koji Taikan. His photography spanned from the 1950s to 1990, and includes many valuable photographs showing the placement of Buddhist statues in a different state than today. Approximately 7,000 glass dry plates were donated to Tezukayama University (Nara) in 2015, and archiving is progressing.
