The crown features a classic teardrop shape. A distinctive feature is the vertical rise of the side crown, exuding a rugged yet dignified atmosphere.
The top has a convex bulge called a modori (return), ensuring a stable and secure fit. It is finished with a firm texture, so it may feel slightly difficult to wear at first, but it will conform to the shape of your head with continued use.
In modern times, there are only a handful of factories in Japan that can specialize in manufacturing men's hats. This hat is made in one of those precious factories, based on the crisp molding using metal dies that was mainstream in America in the 1950s. It faithfully inherits the manufacturing methods of gentlemen's hats from that era, resulting in a robust finish.
The material used is high-quality antelope-finished wool, which is finer and more lustrous than regular wool. Antelope refers to the highest quality rabbit fur felt, where short-haired material is brushed. This wool faithfully reproduces the smooth texture of rabbit fur.
The brim is a 7cm flat brim. It is finished with a bound edge brim with piping on the tip, giving it a luxurious impression.
The ribbon is a special men's ribbon with finely shaped edges (commonly known as ears). This is a luxurious item that can only be woven at low speeds and requires the skilled handwork of artisans in many processes. Its beautiful finish possesses a special presence that cannot be achieved with mass-produced items.
A wind catcher, secured with elastic, is attached around the crown. In the past, it was used by passing a button through the flower hole of a jacket or shirt to prevent the hat from blowing away in the wind or falling off during movement. This wind catcher not only serves a practical purpose but also acts as a subtle accent to tighten the overall look.
The sweatband is made of cowhide leather tanned using the tannin tanning method, where tannins (astringency) found in plant skins, stems, leaves, and fruits are soaked into the leather. It has minimal shrinkage, is robust, and will conform to the shape of your head with use, developing a deep color over time.
