The San Francisco Hat Company's history began in 1980 when Stefan Schinzinger, an industrial designer, encountered a FINO Panama hat, representing the highest quality, in the outskirts of Montecristi, a Panama hat producing region in the hills of Ecuador.

Stefan was completely captivated by the light, soft, and highest quality FINO Panama hat, which perfectly shielded him from the sun in the equatorial city.

At that time, Panama hats sold in the United States were mass-produced and stiffened with a resin called shellac, making them fragile and uncomfortable.

So, Stefan founded the San Francisco Hat Company and began importing genuine Panama hats from Ecuador that were soft, breathable, comfortable, and light to California.
