In a time when there are fewer Japanese-style rooms and less opportunity to experience the scent of real, new tatami, this may be a rare item.

As this is a natural product, there may be color variations, and the scent and color will fade over time.
New tatami (igusa) has fine powder particles.
This powder is called somdo (dyeing soil). Somdo is a natural clay used to give igusa its unique color, scent, and luster. The harvested igusa is mud-dyed to coat its surface.
If this is a concern, please wipe it with a tightly wrung-out cloth along the grain. Then, dry it in the shade.

This was carefully and meticulously crafted with love by my husband, who holds the highest-level 1st-class tatami craftsman qualification and a license as a vocational training instructor for tatami.
