This is a Sumiyoshi Chochin (hanging lantern) size 8, designed to be hung on either side of the Buddhist altar during the Obon season.
The lantern shade is made of luxurious double-layered silk. The pattern drawn on the inner layer is visible through the outer layer, creating a deep, fantastical, and soft glow when lit.
The design features elegant flowers such as chrysanthemums and lotuses beautifully depicted on the black-lacquered top and bottom rings.
