This practice originates from numerous legends where Kobo Daishi Kukai floated a talisman he personally wrote on water and had the afflicted drink the blessed water (sacred water) to achieve recovery from illness.
By floating a single thin sheet of Senmaitoshi paper on a cup of water and chanting Namu Daishi Henjo Kongo three times before drinking, it is believed to alleviate various illnesses, promote physical health, fulfill wishes, and aid in safe childbirth.
