Signstek Audio USB-DAC (Modified) Nichicon and Other Specifications, New
Signstek Audio USB-DAC (Modified) with Nichicon MUSE ES, WIMA (West Germany), and Arcotronics/AV MET components. New.
I replaced all components with the intention of using it myself. While the exterior may be inexpensive, the internals are completely different.
It's built using carefully selected, discontinued, high-quality NOS (New Old Stock) parts, not current production items. All replaced components are new.
Included in the shipment are the DAC unit and a USB cable. The USB cable is the original accessory, but frankly, it's not very good. I recommend using a higher quality USB cable or one specifically designed for audio.
Operation is extremely simple. Just plug the USB into your PC. No external power supply or drivers are needed; it will be recognized by your PC.
Capacitor replacements:
13V 100μF capacitors have been replaced with 25V 100μF ones.
Nichicon MUSE ES (the green ones) are Nichicon's non-polarized (bipolar) electrolytic capacitors for audio.
The gold ones are Nichicon's standard audio electrolytic capacitors, Fine Gold, which combine the latest etching technology for electrode foil with Nichicon's traditional vibration-resistant theory for high-grade audio performance.
The main capacitors have been replaced from ceramic capacitors with NOS capacitors for improved sound quality. WIMA 1.5μF capacitors from the West German era (NOS) have been used.
The blue components are not ceramic capacitors but rather rare film capacitors from the former NISSEI Electric era, part of their phantom capacitor series. MMT type capacitors are ultra-compact film capacitors using extremely thin metallized polyester film and a laminated structure created with NISSEI's unique manufacturing method to meet miniaturization needs.
The white capacitors have been replaced from ceramic capacitors with Italian Arcotronics/AV MET film capacitors R82 250V (one unit).
I have connected the unit to my PC, confirmed its startup, and tested the sound output as shown in the photos. I believe it produces good sound across the entire range, particularly excellent for jazz. It's assembled with a sound profile that complements the OPA627AP.
The chip is fixed and cannot be replaced. For sound quality improvement, the coupling capacitors of the Burr-Brown USB audio card have been replaced with WIMA capacitors from West Germany, known for their high sound quality. I believe this has significantly improved the sound quality. While it may not match high-end units with replaceable chips, I believe it still produces better sound than typical commercially available products.
