◆ Yosegi-zaiku began 140 years ago during the Koka era. Craftsmen meticulously slice various types of wood into thin pieces by hand. These thin slices are then used to create collages on the exterior and surface of products, combining them into diverse patterns and geometric designs, such as mosaics. The craft is called Yosegi-zaiku from his works. Such handicrafts are abundant in the western part of Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, mainly in Odawara and Hakone.
◆ There are over 100 types of Yosegi patterns, including the Tortoiseshell pattern (Kikko-mon), Hemp Leaf pattern (Asa-no-ha), Checkered pattern (Ichimatsu-mon), and Breaking Waves pattern (Hana-kui-mon). Although the Yosegi-zaiku process is complex and labor-intensive, it can be said to be one of Japan's most vibrant and excellent traditional crafts.
