In the Aizu region, cows are called beko.
It is said that a red cow was the last to work during the construction of Fukuman Kokuzoson Enzoji Temple in Yanai-zu, Aizu, about 1200 years ago.
Inspired by that red cow, this toy has long been given and cherished to pray for the good health of newborns and as a charm against epidemics.

Aka-beko is a papier-mâché imitation of a red cow. It is a traditional toy from the Aizu region and has been used as a charm to ward off evil for children. The red color of the body is said to have the effect of warding off evil, and the black spots represent smallpox. There was a custom of giving an Aka-beko to children so that they would not become seriously ill if they contracted the disease. Papermaking techniques were introduced during the Tensho era by artisans invited by Gamo Ujisato to promote local industries.

As shown in the images, in Fukushima Prefecture, most elementary schools have experiences such as painting Aka-beko during field trips.
