This is a simple, uncolored, one-piece carved doll with an octagonal body that utilizes the wood grain of the Japanese pagoda tree. It is also known as an Ainu Kokeshi or Abashiri Kokeshi.
It has been cherished as an Ainu guardian deity, an amulet to protect against illness and injury, and to bring happiness.

This item was displayed for many years on a shelf in a dark place in my parents' home.
It has a calm and gentle face.
