Chigusa Doll
Chigusa Kai
This is a wall-hanging Kabuki Doll.
Chigusa Dolls originated when a housewife, who had evacuated to Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, brought back a Kohagi Doll to Ashiya shortly after the war. In 1951, lessons began at the Hyogo Prefecture Federation of Women's Associations, and our teacher, Ryo Araki (1900-2001), continued to refine the craft. While Kohagi Dolls were themed around the folk customs of the common people of Hagi, Chigusa Dolls were developed to pursue elegance, tailored to the spirit of Ashiya, and completed as exquisite Shiho Dolls. They were then named Chigusa Dolls by Katsuyo Hirose, the then-chairwoman of the Hyogo Prefecture Federation of Women's Associations. Chigusa Dolls were also presented as a congratulatory gift for the wedding of Princess Anne of the British Royal Family.
