Tourus Handmade Pickups 1963 "Vertigo"
The name Vertigo (spatial disorientation) was given to this pickup because it makes you lose track of time and get absorbed while playing it, even during the testing phase.
The tone is a materialized version of a vintage Stratocaster's low gain with a good sense of range, and a light drive that clings to the wound strings around the 12th fret.
Like Fender vintage Stratocasters, we used S-pole tops, clockwise winding, and Alnico 5 magnets, with a meticulous winding of approximately 1000 turns in 4 different winding patterns.
Regarding the tone, it is relatively bright overall, with a wide range from low to high frequencies.
The neck pickup has a low-frequency-biased balance, with a particularly strong sense of compression around the 12th fret. With a moderate amount of overdrive, you can feel a comfortable bluesy feel when playing single notes.
The middle pickup has a good balance, suitable for both cutting and all-around use, with less low-end than the neck pickup.
The bridge pickup has a high-frequency-biased balance. It pairs well with overdrive and has a tone that cuts through when playing riffs.
All positions are wound in the same polarity and direction, so hum cancellation is not effective in the half-tone positions.
However, this results in a tone that feels more forward and present in the half-tone positions, providing a more impactful sound.
Compared to the Glory Days 1961 model we've offered at Tourus, this pickup is slightly brighter, with a wider range and a bit more power.
The impression is similar when compared to our reference, the Custom Shop '60.
For those considering vintage-style pickups, we highly recommend trying this one before investing in more expensive options.
*As this is a new pickup, it will require about 1-2 hours of aging after installation.
