Kagura Mask - Tajikarao-no-Mikoto - No. 38

US Size:

Thank you for looking.

This is a Kagura mask: Tajikarao-no-Mikoto.

This is an Iwami Kagura style mask.

Kagura originally began with ancient people dancing to pray for good health and rejuvenation of the soul, and it is said that these rituals of appeasing spirits and shaking soul-balls are the origin of various Shinto ritual performing arts.

The mask is made by creating a mold from clay, carefully layering Japanese paper, applying a coating of dissolved funori (seaweed glue), and then painting it.

Horse mane is used for the hair of the Kagura mask.
It will naturally settle slightly due to gravity.
