Antique Late 19th Century German Porcelain Figural Spill Vase Cigar Fairing Vtg
Victorian German Fairing Porcelain Figurine Collectible Fairings were small porcelain figurines or trinket boxes that were given away as prizes at fairs (hence the name) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. * The Cigar Connection: Many of these were designed with smokers in mind. The hollowed-out section behind the figurine was often intended to hold matches or rest a cigar. * Matches & Strikes: The underneath is conical in shape for snuffing the match or candle flame. It is unglazed on the front half for use as a match striker to light the matches stored in the back well. Condition: Excellent porcelain w/o chips or cracks. The figure was painted under the glaze and maintains his color. The frame he is holding is either a frame or perhaps a mirror if a bit of long-gone silvered cardboard was glued to it. The swagged drapes on each side have remnants of burgundy colored cold paint. It's flaked off after 125 years but could easily be repainted.
