Red Gourd-Shaped Lacquerware Water Jar - State Guest Gift - Chinese Art

Red gourd-shaped lacquerware, water container, with gold floral decoration.

I received this as a gift from my grandfather, but I don't understand what it is and don't need it, so I'm listing it for sale.

Is it a water pitcher? A vase? A sake flask? A decorative item? Interior decor? A craft? I'm not sure what it is, but it comes in a sturdy box.

The box says State Guest Gift, but I don't know what that means either.
