408 Women's Plain Colored Kimono with Crest
This is a plain kimono dyed a pale purple-pink (a slightly deeper shade of pale crimson) with a single crest added to a white fabric featuring a woven shippo (seven treasures) pattern. The shippo pattern is created by overlapping quarter circles of the same size, and in aristocratic patterns, it is called wagai (interlocking rings). The seven treasures in Buddhism are gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, coral, agate, and mother-of-pearl. While the connection between the shippo pattern in kimono designs and the Buddhist seven treasures is unclear, the circular shape of the shippo is said to represent perfection, leading to its establishment as an auspicious pattern and its inclusion in the treasure trove motifs. (From the Pattern Encyclopedia by the Design Research Institute) The family crest is a nukimon (cut-out crest) and a single Ageha butterfly crest is placed on the back. The Ageha butterfly crest is permitted for anyone to use. It has been used by many families, including the Taira clan and the Tsuchimikado family. The butterfly symbolizes rebirth and immortality, making it a very popular family crest. Therefore, it is possible to use the Ageha butterfly as a family crest even if you do not belong to a specific lineage. As it has a crest, this is a slightly more formal kimono. Adding just one crest elevates it to a level above a houmongi (visiting kimono) without a crest, making it suitable for semi-formal occasions. The lining (dou-ura) is white habutae silk, and the under-collar lining (hakkake) is made of seika chirimen crepe, dyed a plain pale crimson to match the outer fabric. Photo 10 shows the area with the green circle removed, taken at a close distance of about 1 meter. We check for stains and dirt as thoroughly as possible, but there may be instances of oversight. We appreciate your understanding. These are images taken with a digital camera. Please note that colors may vary depending on your monitor. Photos 11 and 12 show a magnified view of the shippo pattern on the textured fabric, taken with a USB microscope.
