Vintage Mid Century Modern Abaca Grainware Raffiaware Salad Bowl
Vintage Mid-Century Modern Abaca Grainware salad bowl, commonly referred to as a Raffiaware style bowl. It is made by embedding a woven natural fabric—specifically abaca fiber or burlap—inside a hard, molded clear fiberglass or resin shell. These distinctive woven-fiber serving pieces were incredibly popular and manufactured extensively during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. While often generically called Raffiaware due to the similar insulated cups of the era, these specific large serving bowls were primarily produced by companies like Grainware and Cambro. Because this is a vintage material combination of natural fibers and aged resin/fiberglass, it requires gentle handling to preserve its gloss and structural integrity. Hand wash only. Never place it in a dishwasher, as high heat and harsh detergents will turn the clear resin cloudy or cause it to delaminate. Do not leave the bowl submerged in water for extended periods. Clean with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft sponge. Avoid abrasive scouring pads that can scratch the smooth finish.
