Antique Silk Italy/UK Beautiful Butterfly Embroidery Star Flower Doily
Late 1800s Victorian era
A delicate and beautiful antique silk doily, adorned with six spread-winged butterflies encircling the rim.
This lovely flower-shaped doily features delicate bobbin lace inlaid within open-cut wings, with butterflies embroidered by hand.
The inner edge forms a curved 12-pointed/12-petal shape, while the outer edge has 24 points/24 petals.
Within the wings, you'll find small floral-like cross motifs and leaf motifs, created with dozens of strands of Maltese bobbin lace, shimmering gently.
The outer wings are plump, finished with a row of small, cute scallops. The body features a mesh pattern.
It has a smooth, flowing texture with a subtle crispness and an elegant sheen. The base silk fabric is thin, likely a lightweight silk shantung, but the silk threads used for the butterfly embroidery lend a pleasant weight.
The subtle color variations between the fabric and embroidery threads are very stylish. On the white fabric, it may appear slightly mottled, with hints of honey and sepia tones.
The thread quality and some details evoke the atmosphere of Maltese lace. It's an elegant, slightly deep ivory tone, much paler than the golden hue native to the Republic of Malta, an island nation in the southern Mediterranean.
It may be of British origin, as in England, Bedfordshire Maltese Lace was created using different silk threads than those native to Malta, in an attempt to replicate Maltese lace. If it's Italian, it would be Maltese Lace, and if it's British, it would be Bedfordshire Maltese Lace.
Please excuse any errors in the amateur measurements below for this handmade item.
Maximum diameter: 19.3-19.5 cm
Weight: Just under 3g
There appear to be no noticeable scratches, stains, or tears. A meticulously crafted work of art.
Ideal for placing under bisque dolls, teddy bears, or other collectibles. It would also make a wonderful display piece coordinated with objects from the Art Nouveau period, which often feature natural motifs.
The glass dome shown in the photos is a separate listing:
Antique Daum Nancy, Japanese Anemone Pattern, Gilded Decanter, Lavender Pink, Carafe
It can also be framed to enjoy the lace itself.
This is one of my favorite pieces, and I'm listing it with some hesitation. I would be delighted if someone looking for it or who loves it could cherish it ✠
I am also listing other lace items with similar colors and textures:
