Antique Point de Gaze Brussels Duchess Lace Handkerchief with Monogram Embroidery
A Belgian antique handkerchief.
This tray cloth features beautiful needlework with raised floral embroidery in Point de Gaze on the gauze corners, and a scalloped rim of Brussels Duchesse lace with petal shapes, along with monogram hand embroidery.
Intricate floral embroidery floats delicately on tulle gauze, shaped like a heart♡.
Seven flower outlines contain embroidered small flowers.
The entire edge is a scalloped design of petals and leaf shapes.
Groups of three and five petals each feature a delicate, airy vein pattern, giving a cool impression. The edge is finished with a subtle picot lace.
Hand-embroidered.
A garland of ribbons connecting small flowers is adorned with a cursive initial A.
The fabric is a finely spun, slightly loosely woven organza or lawn-like cotton.
It has a somewhat sheer, thin, and light feel with a smooth and soft texture.
A light, lovely, and elegantly pure piece.
It is imagined to be a wedding handkerchief, perhaps carried by a bride on her wedding day.
The color is a soft white/ivory, off-white/ecru.
The texture of the yarn knots and the warp and weft threads are also beautiful.
Please excuse any errors in the amateur measurements below for this handmade item.
Approx. 30cm x 29.5cm
Gauze fabric: 23.5cm x 22.5cm
Approx. 8g
There are about four very small, light brown spots, like pinpricks, near the fabric that are visible only upon close inspection, but they are hardly noticeable.
There appear to be no severe stains or dirt.
There are two areas next to the monogram embroidery (7mm x 5mm, 6mm x 4mm) where small frays have been mended with white thread.
Please be understanding of minor imperfections inherent in old handmade items that have passed through time and many hands, as long as they do not impede use.
It would also be lovely as a decorative cloth for displaying dolls or objects, or as a pocket square for a wedding!
It is also beautiful when used to cover objects.
(These will be listed as a set next.)
For those who will cherish it.
I have been collecting antique lace handkerchiefs/cloths for many years.
Several others are also listed.
