Antique Bobbin Lace Linen Shawl - Ivory Ecru with Luster and Sheen
This is a long shawl/summer muffler made from antique, handmade bobbin lace. It features a lustrous and glossy linen, or linen and silk blend, offering a cool and elegant feel.
The design showcases flowing motifs reminiscent of flowers and plants, with ample spacing and openwork. One side is adorned with scalloped lace, adding a touch of delicate charm to its mature aesthetic.
Instead of using thicker yarn for the outlines, a firm cord yarn is placed in the center of the motifs and ribbon-like lines, with finer threads used for partial fixation, creating a three-dimensional effect.
The loose, relaxed, and airy weave, with its uneven texture and natural feel, is truly lovely.
The colors are a pale sand beige, a slightly darker ivory, and a slightly darker ecru.
The luster and sheen are subtle and elegant. The yarn is smooth, soft, and wonderful, resulting in a gentle and soft finish.
Likely a piece from Belgium, Italy, or a similar origin.
It can be used reversibly by turning the flat, non-textured back side to the front. (See images 19 and the last two on the right.)
Please excuse any errors in the amateur measurements of this handmade item:
Length: approx. 143cm - 141cm
Width: approx. 8.5cm - 7cm
Weight: approx. 20g
As this is an aged item, there are occasional instances of broken threads or unraveling at the edges and thread joins due to the weakening of the yarn over time. Some parts of the outer scalloped lace are also missing (it's unclear if these are defects or were never present).
There are signs of repair with natural hemp yarn or very fine cotton thread, but they blend in and are not noticeable.
There are no major tears or stains, and no odors. It is in relatively good condition for an old piece.
In the images, it is layered over a fluffy Hermès silk and cashmere shawl/stole. When paired with a linen or cotton shawl, it would create a more sophisticated look. It would also harmonize beautifully with floral patterns.
It can also be used as a standalone summer muffler or tie. It would look wonderful paired with knits or dresses in colors like black, navy, bordeaux, or gray.
We hope that whoever loves this piece will enjoy coordinating and using it in their own unique way.
