Antique Maltese Lace, Pale Gold Ivory, Bobbin Lace, Floral Doily

US Size:

An antique Maltese lace piece, purchased in Italy, dating from approximately 1860-1910.

Originating from the island of Malta, a Mediterranean archipelago in southern Italy, this specialty is a pale golden hue...
A delicate, milkshake-like egg yolk color,
hand-crafted into an elegant, floral-shaped round doily using ivory silk threads and dozens of Maltese bobbins.

The Maltese lace symbol motif woven into the center is the Maltese Cross ✠.
The two-leafed sprigs and the 11 leaves on the rim are natural.

A gentle light gold, reminiscent of 14k gold.
It is smooth, dry, and has a crispness with a subtle sheen and luster, possessing a texture and feel similar to linen thread.

Its color is intermediate between the glossy golden Maltese lace made with extremely fine threads and the pale ivory Maltese lace I have listed previously.

Please excuse any errors in the amateur measurements of this handmade item:

Diameter: 22.5-22.2 cm
Weight: Approx. 5.8g

There are about 5 or 6 spots of age-related yellowing.
Please check the images.
Knots of thread and thread ends are also visible.
This item is for those who do not mind these imperfections.

Maltese lace, a specialty craft of Malta, which was once a British territory, was praised as a jewel of silk. It is said that most of it was purchased by British royalty, aristocrats, and the wealthy, making it so expensive that even commoners, after investing their lifetime wages, could not afford even a small piece of lace.

The Maltese Cross resembles four leaves joined together, often compared to a four-leaf clover. Its actual characteristic is having eight points. Four V-shaped crests are joined at the base, with the tips of the V's pointing inward to form the corners.

Originally, it was the symbol of the small republic of Amalfi in the 11th century. Later, it was inherited as the symbol of the Knights of Malta (Knights Hospitaller of St. John of Malta), a Christian knightly order (one of the three major knightly orders of medieval Europe). Their mission was to protect Christian pilgrims visiting the Holy Land. The order also had hospital functions and eventually became a主力 in defending the Holy Land and fighting against the Islamic forces.

It projects the highest spirit of noble virtue onto numerous honorable decorations.
