Sendai Date Clan Jin-gasa Antique
This item was found at my family home in Sendai City.
Given the presence of the Kuyomon (nine-star crest) on the surface, which is associated with the Date clan of Sendai, and its vermilion lacquer finish, it is highly likely to be a Sendai Jin-gasa (Sendai military hat) worn by ashigaru (foot soldiers) and lower-ranking samurai of the Sendai domain. The Kuyomon was widely used in the Sendai domain, and items with such vermilion lacquered undersides are treasured as antiques. The aged patina of the lacquer deepens its antique charm.
